Today’s meditation opens with a passage from Robyn Davidson that states, “He was teaching me something about flow, about choosing the right moment for everything, about enjoying the present.” Awareness of process is an essential part of living if we are to truly find peace and enjoy ourselves along the way. We can discover much by simply pausing to observe. Life and all that happens within it is a process. We are always growing and evolving, changing from one moment to the next, shaped as much by our environment as by our own will. When we start out, and indeed throughout our journey, we don’t have a clear idea of where we are going or the path we will take to get there. We follow the process, letting each moment unfold and making choices as we go.
On the topic of awareness of process, Anne Wilson Schaef writes:
“Sometimes our teachers appear in the most unlikely forms. Robyn Davidson is speaking of an old Aborigine who traveled with her for a while. Although their cultures were vastly different, he taught her some elemental wisdom that needed to be acknowledged and experienced in her culture.
We all need to know about flow. Nothing gets done at once even when we demand it. Work and living flow in a series of nonlinear events.
Timing is also very important. We cannot correct and edit a report until it is written. When our boss is having a bad day, it is not a good idea to bring up an interpersonal problem that happened last week. We cannot control another’s reactions by choosing ‘the right moment,’ and we can choose the time that is best for us. And we always have the choice to stop and enjoy the present.”
Flow is integral to life. When we’re in the flow at work, we are fully absorbed in our present task, letting things unfold before our very eyes. We let creativity and inspiration carry us away. We go with the flow. Both time and life follow this pattern of flow as well. We cannot force things to happen our way, to demand that time speed up, slow down, or stop entirely. Perhaps we long for that lightning strike of inspiration, motivation. Or for someone to fall in love with us. These things unfold naturally over time, in a series of nonlinear events. We cannot force them, and to do so would be unnatural, a perversion of the process. Little moments here and there contribute to the buildup of a larger outcome. Awareness of process means being conscious of the natural flow of the universe, and choosing to go with it rather than to fight it. It means understanding that things take time and not to rush them. When we are aware, we live in the moment, accepting things as they are rather than forcing them to adhere to our criteria. It makes for a much more pleasurable trip. Enjoy the journey, for it is more of the experience than is reaching the final destination.
